Tillydrone Book Club

The Tillydrone Book Club have just read The Hundred-Year-Old Man who Climbed out The Window and Disappeared by Jonas Jonasson. Despite the mouth full of the title, the book takes an interesting look at life from the perspective of the 100-year-old protagonist Allan, a character whose life was already full of chaotic stories of explosives, war and his friendship with problematic Communist leaders. On his one hundredth birthday he decides to flee a nursing home via his room window and take off on a somewhat more chaotic adventure filled with gangsters, an elephant and a submarine, and that is only the tip of the Iceberg.

The book group found the story to be far-fetched in a lot of places, but ultimately the dry humour of this story and absurdity of the scenarios that Allan found himself in made the book a real page turner, so much so, the group scored the book a 9/10.

Our next read Is Adam Kay’s This is Going to Hurt. A book filled with stories from the writer’s time while working as a Junior Doctor for the NHS between 2004 and 2010.

The Tillydrone Book Club started in January 2025, and we have been Lucky enough to have access to a catalogue of many different books. Our members are free to be honest about what we read, as not every book is amazing.  At every meeting we neither always agree nor disagree but respect each other enough to value one another’s opinions.  This is what some of our members have to say about the Club:

“If I was in a book group with my friends, it might be that our thoughts and opinions would be similar. But at book group it is not like that.”

“I like the aspect of meeting people you don’t know, from a variety of people from all walks of life and hearing their different Opinions.”

“It’s been interesting reading books that I would have never considered reading.”

“I enjoy sharing opinions and exploring ideas with other people.”

“It helped me get back into reading”

“I enjoy the surprise and excitement of finding out What the next book will be.”

“We often get into conversations about other books, movies and TV Shows. A lot of great recommendations.”

“Tea, Biscuits and a Chat.”
